(NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Oct. 25, 2018) – After one and one-half years in the making, The Country Network (TCN) and Appalachian CMH23, Inc. (CMH23) have announced a newly formed partnership, sharing their vision, and blending resources and logos to produce a new regional cable television channel called CMH23. The channel will offer original programming dedicated to building future music careers, growing and promoting tourism and highlighting history and events in the counties along the Country Music Highway. This hybrid channel takes The Country Network programming and inserts local content creating a hometown feel, which is exclusive to this new regional network.

The idea for this new channel, CMH23, came about when the Governor challenged the cities along the Country Music Highway and the Appalachian Region to utilize what they are best known for – their local musical talent and picturesque beauty – to make a difference. From this challenge came CMH23, an idea developed between Keith Casebolt and Gearheart Communications that eventually grew into a non-profit spearheaded by Appalachian Wireless CEO Allen Gillum, Keith Casebolt, and Prestonsburg Mayor Les Stapleton. CMH23 will operate as a website (CMH23.com) and a television channel (CMH23) and partner with TCN, a national network, to expand its reach.  This concept originated during the first SOAR summit (Shaping Our Appalachian Region), a local initiative that works to expand job creation, enhance regional opportunity, innovation, and identity, improve the quality of life, and support all those working to achieve these goals in Appalachian Kentucky.

The debut show under the partnership, “Live from CMH23,” is a 13-part series that will premiere November 5 on The Country Network.  The show will introduce viewers to the next generation of artists and musicians from this region, featuring interviews and live performances as well as showcasing the natural beauty of Eastern Kentucky.  It will be broadcast nationally on The Country Network and regionally on CMH23 (available eventually in approximately 200,000 cable households along the Country Music Highway).

The first one-hour episode made its debut to local Kentucky dignitaries in Prestonsburg at the Mountain Arts Center (MAC) on Oct. 12, 2018. Cary Rolfe, VP of Programming and Artists Relations, Tim Eaton, President and CEO of The Country Network, and CMH23 Board Members Allen Gillum, Keith Casebolt, Mayor Les Stapleton, Amanda Clark, and Dew Gorman participated in a panel discussion to elaborate on how the project came to fruition and the event was open to the public.

“We are excited to have an opportunity to join with TCN on such a valuable partnership,” commented Les Stapleton, Mayor, City of Prestonsburg, Ky. “Being able to showcase our local talent on a National stage is a door that has never been opened but being able to share content with TCN is an asset that can illustrate to the Nation what talent our rich culture has afforded us.  As a region, we have always been proud of our history, culture, and talent. Pairing that with our natural beauty and unique terrain, then utilizing CMH23.com to guide people to our area, we will make an impact on the economy of Appalachia.“

TCN and its production arm, Panther Island Productions. shot the first season of 13 episodes in April 2018 at the Hillbilly Days Festival in Pikeville, Kentucky, at the historic Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, Kentucky, and the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. TCN and Panther Island Productions returned in October 2018 to shoot the second season.

The unique partnership between The Country Network and CMH23 allows TCN to help supplement the funding of this non-profit by donating up to 20% of CMH23’s cable affiliate fees and allowing the channel to keep proceeds from locally inserted commercial spots. “It’s a pleasure to partner with such a great organization like Appalachian CMH23 Inc. who is trying to help their economy thru tourism,” Tim Eaton, President & CEO, The Country Network commented regarding the new venture. “Being able to create original programming from such a musically historic region is a Producer’s dream.”

Keith Casebolt had this to add about the new partnership, “I want to thank The Country Network for their passion! We share the same sentiments and believe that fate has brought us together in realizing the vision and becoming our partner in this project. Their commitment has changed an entire region and made a difference that will last for generations to come.”

Earlier this month CMH23 was honored with an Innovation Award and Grant at the 2018 SOAR Awards held in Pikeville at the East Kentucky Expo Center.

Rj Curtis Named Incoming Executive Director of Country Radio Broadcasters/Country Radio Seminar

(NASHVILLE, Tenn. – October 17, 2018) The Country Radio Broadcasters/Country Radio Seminar has announced long-time radio and industry veteran, RJ Curtis as the incoming Executive Director of the non-profit organization.  Curtis, who currently serves as the Nashville Editor for All Access Music Group, will start his new position on Nov. 12 and until then, can then be reached at rjcurtis@allaccess.com.

Curtis fills the position most recently held by Bill Mayne, who has served as Executive Director of the organization for nearly a decade. This past April, Mayne announced that he would be leaving his position following the 50th Anniversary year of Country Radio Seminar. Curtis will work alongside Mayne through the end of his term, which is May 2019.

Curtis commented, stating “CRS has been an important part of my professional life for 35 years, never ceasing to challenge, reward, and re-ignite my zeal for our format and its many stakeholders. At my very core, I’m a radio guy and will always think like one, but I’ve also been fortunate to work in other segments of this industry, gaining additional perspective and learning a ton. Two decades on the CRB Board encompassed those various experiences; together, all have more than adequately prepped me for what I consider the opportunity of a lifetime at CRB. Concurrently, I’ll have the honor of working with Bill Mayne until his triumphant sign-off in May. He’s been a mentor, brother, and friend to me since 1983, and – fun fact – brought me to my first CRS in 1985, while serving as my PD at KZLA/Los Angeles. Following his legendary stewardship of CRB is a daunting task, and a responsibility I’ll take seriously.”

CRB Board President, Kurt Johnson, said, “Among some great candidates for this role, RJ stood out. His unequalled experience and passion for Country Radio, Country music, and CRB made him the right person at the right time. We’re beyond excited to have him lead CRS into its sixth decade.”

RJ Curtis has served on the CRS Board of Directors since 1999, with a deep involvement in CRS leadership for 19 of those 20 years. He’s a longtime member of the CRS Executive Committee and a past CRS Board President (2004-2007). Since 2009, Curtis has been the organization’s Vice-President, and Chairman of the Country Radio Hall Of Fame, administered by CRS.

For the past 12 years, Curtis has been working on the trade publication sector of the music business as a journalist, providing news, insight, and perspective on Country radio and its evolution. Since 2013, he’s been the Nashville Editor for the All Access Music Group; previously, Curtis was VP/Country for Country Aircheck, and Country Editor for the legendary Radio & Records Magazine. His professional diversity includes experience on the label side with Arista Nashville, handling Dir./Midwest Promotion responsibilities.

Curtis’ core background is radio. Curtis launched his broadcast journey fresh out of high school and spent 30 years in the business, 27 exclusive to Country radio and a combined 17 years in three different decades at Country KZLA/Los Angeles. His tenure there included every aspect of programming and management, including weekends, mornings, plus APD/MD, PD and OM responsibilities.

In the intervening years away from Los Angeles, Curtis oversaw two additional, legendary radio brands as PD and OM of KNIX/Phoenix and KCYY/San Antonio, respectively. His diverse radio background includes national syndication, too, as OM for the Blair Garner-hosted After Midnite, and creator of several long-form programs for Premiere Radio.

During his nearly 40 years in Country music, Curtis has volunteered his service to the industry as a member of the CMA, ACM, and St. Jude Children’s Hospital Radio Advisory Boards, in addition to his involvement with Country Radio Seminar.

The 50th Anniversary Country Radio Seminar will be held February 13-15, 2019 at the Omni Nashville Hotel.  For more information, please visit www.CountryRadioSeminar.com.

Rita Wilson has enjoyed a long and successful career in show business as an actress (Sleepless In Seattle, Now and Then, Runaway Bride), producer (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Mamma Mia!), director, and writer, but it wasn’t until 40 years after she made her television debut that she branched out into a new line as a singer. Inspired by her run in Broadway’s Chicago in 2006, she made her recording debut with 2012’s AM/FM, a set of covers. Sticking to a warm, adult contemporary sound, she made her songwriting debut with her eponymous album, released in 2016.  Rita’s new album, Bigger Picture reunites her with producer Fred Mollin (Johnny Mathis, Jimmy Webb, and Kris Kristofferson) and expands on her gifts as a storyteller and vocalist. She has crafted a revelatory set of songs, which allow her to tell stories—including her own—in entirely new ways. GRAMMY® Award-nominated, platinum-certified hitmaker Cassadee Pope’s single, “Take You Home,” was released earlier this year and has garnered over 10 million streams. The follow up “One More Red Light,” was released to critical praise just this month. Following her victory on Season 3 of The Voice, her 2013 debut, Frame By Frame, bowed at No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Albums Chart and it’s lead single, “Wasting All These Tears” went platinum. In 2016, she teamed with Chris Young for the No. 1 hit “Think Of You,” which garnered a GRAMMY® nod for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Blaine Mitchell is a former contestant and Season 9 finalist from NBC’s The Voice. Now frontman for the band, Love & War, Blaine took a road trip with several friends and bandmates and created a series of live-recorded singles in National Parks around the United States. Those acoustic singles/videos will be released alongside studio singles later this year 2018.  Love & War is a passion project that is heavily influenced by nature and the band’s own personal life experiences. Blaine’s desire for adventure and life on the road shines through in the group’s unique folk/pop road trip sounds. With her beguiling vocals and powerful delivery, Haley Reinhart headlined her first international tour, visiting seven countries across Europe as well as her second solo headlining tour of the U.S. in 2017.  She just released her first single from her upcoming fourth album release. Her previous single “Can’t Help Falling In Love” went Top 20 at Hot AC/AC radio, is certified Platinum status and has over 115 million streams on Spotify and 42 million views on YouTube. Exceptionally versatile singer-songwriter, Maggie Rose has been named to YouTube’s Emerging Artist and Artist in Residence 2018 programs, and Pandora named her an Artist to Watch 2018. Land O’Lakes tapped her for a synchronization deal that lends her voice to a national ad campaign focusing on Women’s Empowerment. Maggie Rose just released her highly anticipated album, Change The Whole Thing, which encompasses a blend of American music melding Rock, Soul, Rhythm and Blues, Country and Gospel. Seth Ennis broke into the Country music format with early nods from SiriusXM naming him one of their “Future Five,” to CMT, PandoraThe Huffington Post, and Rolling Stone Country naming ‘One To Watch.’ The 25-year-old multi-instrumentalist, co-wrote, co-produced and played all parts on his acclaimed debut single, “Woke Up In Nashville.” New Jersey native Patrick Droney spent his formative years touring with the likes of BB King and James Brown, with features in prominent magazines and appearances on national television (People Magazine, Guitar World, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon). His song “High Hope” was featured in ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.  The independent Kobalt/AWAL artist released his self-titled EP that was produced by Droney and Ian Fitchuck. In its first week of release, the first song from his 2018 EP “Stand and Deliver” logged over 100,000 streams pushing it into the Top 10 on Spotify’sViral 50 in the US.

In addition to the main events that all grand prize winners will attend fans who win access to the event on the “Country Track” will enjoy an intimate Opening Reception on Friday, November 2nd featuring LOCASH and Lucas Hoge as well as a Breakfast on Saturday, November 3rd featuring Tegan Marie, Tyler Rich, Clare Dunn, and Haley & Michaels. With two albums and eight charting singles to their credit, LOCASH broke out in 2015 with their gracious GOLD-certified hit, “I Love This Life,” followed by the flirtatious GOLD-certified #1 smash, “I Know Somebody” – their first trip to the top of the Country radio airplay charts. Now recently signed to BBR Music Group, the duo has a new single, “Feels Like a Party,” currently climbing the charts.” Named “One To Watch” by BillboardHuffPost, and Rolling Stone, Tegan Marie has catapulted into the national spotlight with performances on ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s TODAY and PBS’ Smokey Robinson: The Gershwin Prize, in addition to appearances on the Radio Disney Music Awards (2017-18).  As her videos continue to gain a wide audience (over 200 MILLION views), Tegan Marie has performed at the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium, Stagecoach, and CMA Music Fest and shared the stage with artists such as Cam, Hunter Hayes and Kelsea Ballerini while partnering with Pepsi MidAmerica for a tour across the Midwest.  2018 CMT Listen Up and SiriusXM Highway Find Artist, Tyler Rich will join Brett Young’s CMT ON TOUR: HERE TONIGHT this fall following lineups alongside Dustin Lynch, Sam Hunt, Brett Eldredge, Justin Moore, Cole Swindell, and Dan + Shay. Featured on his debut self-titled EP (The Valory Music Co.), the Northern California native’s breakout tune, “The Difference,” has already crossed over 25 million streams, scored a No. 1 on SiriusXM and is Top-30-and-rising on Country radio.  MCA Nashville singer/songwriter Clare Dunn is a dynamic new artist on the country music scene who has garnered critical praise as a “masterful guitar player who can do it all” (CMT). The Colorado native joined country superstar Miranda Lambert on the recent Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour as well as country music’s platinum-selling artist Chris Young on the I’m Comin’ Over Tour. Clare, named “One To Watch” by USA Today, Billboard, The Boston Globe and Rolling Stone, wrote all of the songs on her self-titled EP including fan favorites “Move On,” “Tuxedo” and the emotional “Old Hat” plus, her brand new, tenderhearted single, “More,” playing at radio now. Haley & Michaels has been featured on numerous Spotify playlists, where they’ve amassed more than 20 million in streams and performed twice on The TODAY Show. The duo recently signed with Sony/ATV Publishing and Reviver/Hickory Records/RED Music and are in the studio working on their first full-length studio album. Lucas Hoge recently garnered attention with the release of his new album Dirty South. In its debut week, the record ascended to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Country Album Sales chart.  Whether he’s performing for troops overseas, sharing his love for the great outdoors with fellow sportsmen at a Bass Pro/Cabela’s gathering or writing another song for a hit TV show, Hoge has that rare ability to find common ground with just about anyone and draw them into his world.

Live In The Vineyard is a “once-in-a-lifetime” three-day event with exquisite food tastings by renowned and celebrated chefs including Ken Frank, pourings by some of the most revered vintners at wineries including Eleven Eleven, Italics Winegrowers, JaM Cellars, Liana, Maxville, Miner, Regusci Winery, Reynolds Family Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery, Shadybrook, Stag’s Leap, Trefethen, Vista Collina, Wheeler Farms, Whetstone and more.

The Tom Rivers Humanitarian Award is given at the discretion of the Country Radio Broadcasters Board of Directors to recognize an individual in the Country Radio industry who has displayed a magnanimous spirit of caring and generosity in service to their community.  This award is named in honor of CRB Board member Tom Rivers, who died in 2004 at age 38 of bronchial asthma.  Rivers, known for his work at WQYK, Tampa/St. Petersburg and WUSN, Chicago, was highly regarded for his public service. Past recipients of the Tom Rivers Humanitarian Award include Dan Halyburton, Peter Smyth, Jeff Smulyan, Mary Quaas, George G. Beasley, and more.

Bill Lawson’s career in Birmingham began in 1979 at WERC-FM. His leap into Country music came in the early 80’s where he worked under the helm of Rusty Walker at WZZK. At that time, Lawson did Middays and soon moved to Mornings where he co-hosted the show with the late Patti Wheeler. Together, they had 20 years of being number one. They left in early 2002 and that Fall, Bill and Patti were hired by Tom Hanrahan of iHeartMedia when he launched 102.5 The Bull (WDXB). Patti retired in 2008 and in the last ten years, Lawson has been paired with Madison Reeves as part of The Dollar Bill and Madison Show on The Bull.

Over the years, Lawson has graciously donated his time to work with charities that involve children, including Children’s Miracle Network, Easter Seals and Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), hosting annual radio telethons. In 2002, Lawson was introduced to St Jude and its cause and mission. Since that time, Lawson has been the driver behind every radiothon, event, and walk that’s been done for St. Jude and his support has helped raise over three million dollars for St. Jude in Birmingham.
